Players Publishing needed a refreshed and compelling visual identity to maintain its competitive edge and increase reader engagement in a rapidly evolving global gaming market. The associated industry awards also required a distinct and impactful visual presence to boost interest and industry participation. The existing visual language needed modernization to better reflect the innovation and dynamism of the gaming industry.

As Senior and Lead Designer, I was responsible for overseeing the visual direction of  Players Publishing magazine and the graphics for their industry awards.

My key leadership duties included:

  • Team Management: Proofing, discussing, and setting deadlines for the design team, and assigning tasks.
  • Mentorship: Mentoring and training junior designers, contributing to their visible improvement in skills (though specific metrics would strengthen this further if available).
  • Strategic Collaboration: Communicating directly with editors and the sales team to ensure design concepts aligned with editorial content, sales objectives, and overall business goals, consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Creative Direction: Directing the visual identity of the awards to increase industry interest and engagement.

 

My approach involved working closely with editorial and sales teams to understand content themes and campaign objectives. I led the design conceptualization for magazine layouts and award collateral, ensuring consistency while pushing creative boundaries. The process included iterative design, incorporating feedback from stakeholders to refine visuals for maximum impact.

 

We delivered a cohesive and impactful visual identity for Players Publishing, including:

  • Editorial Design: Stand-out magazine pages that captured complex industry topics in an engaging visual format (e.g., examples shown on pages 2 and 3 of your portfolio ).
  • Award Graphics: Dynamic and prestigious graphics for the gaming awards that reflected the event’s importance within the industry.
  • Digital Assets: Supporting digital collateral for online platforms (as implied by “digital assets” )

 

The strategic direction and execution of the visual identity for both the magazine and the awards led to a demonstrable increase in interest and engagement in the industry during past events. This strengthened Players Publishing‘s position as a leading voice and platform within the global gaming sector.
